Hello friends, welcome to The Deranged World. This domain is primarily a personal introspection of thoughts, feelings and activities. Some of them are funny, some slightly emotional, some exceedingly intellectual, and others completely nonsensical in nature. But nevertheless, they all reflect a truthful element of myself then. In addition, you may check out the Project RN series located at 'Interchange'. Do leave a comment as an when you wish, I'll be more than glad to reply them.

They said the drummer girl was too fast

Jesse agrees.

In the previous three episodes we had featured Azu-nyan, Yui and Mio. Azu-nyan was technically a 1.6E (Enhanced) drawing- a prototype of portraits, and Yui paved a higher basis for an even higher drawing style. We finally coughed out a 1.7 prototype for Mio, the first of its kind last wednesday. The first (and last) T1.7 portrait took five and the half hours to complete, and the process was so laborous I needed a break of three days after that.

Today we have our 4th K-ON! character up on the drawing pad (there are five of them altogether). Her name is Ritsu, and technically she was going to be this healthy and energetic drummer (and also leader) of the club. There is constantly a slight look of defiance, misdemeanour, and tomboyish look in her eyes, although at instances she may too have her rightful girlish charms. What else about her is pretty straightforward- she needed to stop looking like a 12 year old.

Drawing the standard facial poses was pretty okay by now- we still have that armada of set-squares, protractors and calculators. But this one challenged me greatly in terms of hairstyle and facial structure. Unlike our Mio, whom has this bashful looks safely hidden under folds of long sweeping hair, Ritsu (her best friend anyway) sports much shorter hair, pulled back and held in place by a hairband. Consequently, much of her forehead, and the sides of her face are exposed.

Well, whats so difficult? Technically, most drawers (i like the puns) tend to like to hide character faces under great folds of hair. Hair is relatively easy to draw (although it's quite a nightmare to shade), and more importantly it obscures any potential errors in facial shape near the eye-ear region, as well as the eyebrows. Moreover, its more than a stereotype that a girl must look graceful to look ideal. Tom-boyish hair, yet looking ideally girlish? No link.

But we had fun nevertheless. A ear-ring was added, and we allowed a single strand of hair to fall in front of her face to allude potential feminity. The shading still cannot fully mirror the facial contours (I am technically a noob, mind you), but I tried to make it up with softer shadings.

Oh yah, this time the background music (BGM) was Kenny G.

The outcome was fun. Ritsu looks pretty decent (not fully elaborated, but neither too abstract for it's type), and there is a sense of symmetry. I was quite worried of the hair (or the lack of it) this time, but it turned out fine nevertheless. But what was really suprising was the time taken- compared to our the previous picture, this one took a mere 2 hours to attain general 1.7 standards.

Yes- and if practised consistently, it is possible to reduce the time to one-and-a-half hours. If so, then type 1.7 pictures can become the norm standard of drawing from now on.

This drummer girl was suprisingly fast on its own, just like how she beats the drums too quickly all the time LOL- even so, I don't intend to start rush things through haphazardly. Our final character, Tsumugi, would be up soon- and seemingly it would be impossible to rush her. (Not that she is a graceful piano player, but rather because her hairstyle looks completely gravity defying and nightmarish), in the meantime- we might of course spend the extra time sitting back, have cake, and have fun.

Genre: Version 1.7 anime / manga conversions
Source Material: Ritsu Tainaka, Sakurakou K-ON Bu, K-ON!! Listen!!
Dimensions: 20 : 14 cm bust portrait
Idealism factor : 75%
Duration: 2 hours (record timing)
Comments: More elaboration could be done to the ends of the hair, more complex shadowing required (possibly higher versions), facial contours could be further perfected (was an upgrade from the previous picture), could be generally more darker, but I do not want to push too much for something that was supposed to be bright and energetic. And- stop being lazy on the body!

Type 1.7 prototypes

The official prototypes for type 1.7 pictures are finally out.

In summary, Type 1.7 a.k.a T1.7 pictures are a conceptual upgrade from the former T1.5 pictures on the Level of Elaboration (LoE) scale. Although these two types of pictures generally employ contemporary real-life proportions, T1.7 pictures convey greater levels of realism, elaboration and detail than their T1.5 counterparts.
Since these pictures require more detail and effort, so far there are only two pictures that are officially classified as T1.7.

The following picture is the official release picture for Mio-chan, the first of the two T1.7 pictures. Due to technical reasons, it was not possible to digitally scan the picture without damaging the overall image. Rather, this is a photographed image of the original, taken under incandacent lighting from a neutral perspective. As stated, it is not perfect on itself, and there are still minor perspective errors. Nevertheless, do enjoy this picture.

And Mio killed the witch

On many many levels.... there is the L4D2 version, and it was really an epic story on its own. On rare occasions in might involve lesbianism, quite a lot of shrieking, and definitely lots of bloody play... but then-

OKAY OKAY Jesse, its another story on its own...

Today we will be revisitng a much more toned-down version. Mio in this case would not be a chainsaw wielding fanatic, but a pencil portrait on a piece of A4 paper. She would be the 5th attempt into drawing proper, and personally she is the biggest achievement (insofar) within this domain of art.

Akiyama Mio is technically a 17 year old female with a very curious personality. Left handed and shy in nature, it is paradoxical that she somehow finds herself in the centerstage of events. On the other hand, she is technically a rational and matured person, but on occasions may go to the other extreme to become a girly (moe) female who wins her way into the hearts of viewers. Moreover, she looks like a 12 year old in the anime. There was no moving pictures to show all of the above traits in succession, so all of them have to be integrated into one single picture-

It was naturally difficult. Firstly, Mio needed a girly pose, and she must look moe. Not forgetting the fact that she's most matured, on top that she is actually (quite a hot) 17 year old- that had to come out via her facial and body expression. On top of it all, she has this....... pose. I am terrible at perspectives, and I was sure I would get some sort of witch as an outcome by the end of the day. It's okay- a witch would make do too-  it would be a good demonstration alpha to all future portraits in perspectives.

Armed with an armada of rulers and complex calculations (including trigonometric formulae), a whole new set of measurments was conjured to ensure that she does not look out of proportion on the flipside. I thought the hair was easier to draw than the Hirasawa Genius, or at least easier than Azu-nyan- evidently the bangs were completely gravity defying in the reference picture, so I had to make do.

They say gravity never agreed with a woman's appearance- how true, how true.

Now that I am staring at her now- I have to admit that she looks..... attractive. Not exactly ideally perfect straight on (she afterall attempt #05, and I don't exactly learn very fast), but she definitely does have that allure (converted accordingly) that has captivated the hearts of many. The perspectives turned out pretty fine too, and although I have that innate conscience telling me to forsake mathematical calculations and rely straight on intuition. I guess the truth of art lies somewhere in between these two.... nope, no golden ratio yet- she's not that real either. But one thing- she definitely did not turn out to be a witch.

And thats how Mio killed the witch. LOL

Next on the list would be Ritsu- an energetic, sassy character with a really big heart and a personality that contrasts completely with Mio-chan. Hopefully she would be easier to draw (since her hair is much shorter) this time; lessons in art is fun, but the Doki-Doki effect everytime I pick up the pencil isn't exactly what I would like to classify as... ummmm-

Nevermind- just BRING IT ON!!! =D

Dimensions: 20 : 14 cm bust portrait
Idealism factor: 75%
Duration: 5.5 hours (took a nap in between because too tired)
Attempts: 5th attempt, 1st attempt on perspective
Comments: Stop shading with a mechanical pencil, Jesse! The shading could be more realistic if a soft 4B pencil was used instead.  The mouth may be slight off from the mathematically calculated position, but it was the best of my ability for now. Nose is getting better, but can still be improved. Looks a little bit slutty, but hey- its at least she looks her age.

The Hirasawa Genius

I like fun things because they are fun
Factorize x^2 - 13x + 30; ans: (x) * (x) - (13) * (x) + (30)
- Yui Hirasawa

So then; this post is not dedicated to her LOL. Rather, its more on the lines of attempt #04, or the second attempt to up the level of realism unto a manga (whimsical pictures) character. The target character was Yui Hirasawa, the light-headed girl- the epitome of cuteness, and a personal favourite

Some things definitely have to go, now that she no longer that moe looking 11 year old moe-blob impersonating a 17 year old high school student. No matter how her character may deem otherwise, it was imperative that a portrait of her cannot include the chibi traits. The diabetes-inducing sweetness have to be moderated with biological maturity, on the other hand Azy-nyan had already set a (personally) high benchmark for a 3rd attempt. On the third leg I am still halfway searching my own drawing style, complimented with an onslaught of depth perception problems. Damn, it was tough stuff.

Well, I had started by using initial measurments for Azu-nyan. However it soon became apparent that I was on the way to cloning her all over again. Moreover, Yui was technically supposed to be 1 year older. In the end, slight modifications were given to the head-eye-chin proportions to give a slightly more matured look. More emphasis was also given to the eyes (make-up?) and eyebrow.

And the hair was nightmare. In the original it came down in clumps, but this cannot be transcripted without looking as if she had been up and around with lots of wax. I guess I traded some of the cute-factor off to gravity.... I really need to learn how to draw proper.

Well, I guess the end product looks quite cool- the digital copies look terrible, so I cannot post them up online. Well, it was noted that she looks 18 (one year more... ), and slightly older than Azy-nyan. It was also detected that she seems comparitively softer, intuitive and gentle. HOORAY- character conversion success.

Alright, two down, three more to go- The next picture would involve slight perspective (a BIG challenge), although the hair would be slightly easier. Perhaps it would only be completed 2 days later, since I have an assignment due tomorrow, so in the meantime Mio-chan would have to wait. As for Azy-nyan and our Hirasawa Genuis, hopefully they go well together in my sketch-file. They are technically inseperable in the anime anyway.... LOL.

Idealism factor: 75% (how much was made up)
Duration: 3.5 hours
Attempts: Global- 4th attempt, local- 1st attempt.
Comments: Could be made more realistic via detailed facial shadowing (but that requires reference), could be more fluid without arbitrary mathematical measurments, the full body could be added to compliment.

Siobhan, Ms Yemete, and Azu-nyan

Picked up a new skill- drawing proper.

Not that I have never touched a picture before- Technically I have been meddling with other's pictures for quite a long time, being technical along the way, and never by once leading by example. I have said before I do not have proper depth perception, so in a way it puts me in a sort of disadvantage from the start.

So far I have only made 3 rough sketches over the course of 3 days. Three sketches of human faces (or 3 portraits, you might want to say). The main objective was to draw (and shade) a face from scratch, or by simplistic reference to manga pictures; the challenge was to make it asthetically pleasing (and of course, slightly more realistic).

The first attempt were kinda half-drawn. Literally, since I only managed to (barely) outline half a face before my visual perception starts spinning out of control. The eyes were drawn first, and then detail was added, starting from features ajacent to the eyes, and finally the face shape was inserted accordingly. No outlines were used, and features were directly shaded into the face itself. Some european female of 23 years emerged from the muddle of grey and black- barely human, but well it was a start. I called her Siobhan anyway.

The second attempt came the next evening. It was going to be a generic female (totally from memory), and this time with greater determination to put the symmetry and depth perception under control. As with the first, the eyes were drawn first, but this time the entire head was outlined. Some rudimentary measurment was utilized (via no of thumbs) to estimate facial proportions. There was a lot of trail-and-error involved, and the face was shortened greatly to prevent her from looking like a horse. A Jap chick of 28 years emerged, with huge black eyes and strereotypical hair. There was still residual asymmetry, and she seems to have the Yemete look; so I named her Ms Yemete. So much for Jesse's repressed fantasies of girls going Yemete Yemete then-

The third attempt was a trial attempt to convert anime characters into 1.5 version. It was an ambitious attempt, since I do not remember encouraging conversions till the basics were mastered. Nevertheless, the same method was employed to Azu-nyan (tts her name in the manga), like how it did to Ms Yemete and Siobhan. However this time I was armed with an armada of calculators and rulers (and an eye patch) to plot coordinates of where each feature was suppoed to go. Azu-nyan came out in the wash, looking sweet sixteen (but has a rebellious edge), complete with a cute ponytail that impossible hairstyle. I am considering whether I ought complete her with some hot-looking body, but I guess that might take up to 4 pages (the head is already half a page long).

Hey, drawing is fun. Although my current level status is still "under-training", it is nevertheless heartening to produce semi-graduated pictures (the shading masks lots) that have their own set of imperfections. This is the essence of living- not being perfect, but rather halfway attaining perfection.

If I may have the liberty of time tomorrow I'll start work on the Hirasawa Genius (personally my favourite moe character). Hopefully she'll turn out okay- either way, i'll have fun nevertheless.

Trotters the Greedy Pig

There was once a little pig called Trotters who was rooting in the field when it suddenly found a pot of gold.

"Finders, keepers." Thought Trotters. I cannot not share these with Crumples the cow or Fleecie the sheep. I cannot even share it with my brothers Oink and Grunty This gold is mine- mine alone.....!"

As he could not carry back all the gold home without being seen, Trotters decided to gobble the pot of gold instead. He'll get them out when he gets back home- feeling very full, he oinked his way back to the pigpen.

It was at this time farmer Joe needed to sell a pig to the market. So he went into the pig pen with a weighing scale.

Poor Trotters! He was most stuffed, and now he rounder than all of his brothers put together. Farmer Joe didn't even need to use the scales... Up the lorry Trotters went, and that was the last everybody saw of him.

What is the moral of the story?

Well then, material riches should never be consumated- they'll only weigh you down.

School's out

School's out. Its time to reinstate certain repressed domains of expansion.

Firstly, Complete RN(T2)- patch up to publication standards, currently there are 4 more posts, and probably a couple diagrams to illustrate matters. The address of meaning must have a proper closure- and that has been postponed for almost a month due to commitments in academics. I do not think I'll start T3 anytime soon- but I'll put up a couple of though experiements and discussions on the relavent domains.

Secondly, It's good time to work out those flabs. It's not only about the united nations- on the flipside, I look exactly like a babylon fertility goddess.... There will be an exercise regime allocated to this concern. I need to reinstate my 12 pull-ups, 21 km run, and of course, my ability to go back to the damn beach without looking like a bitch.

Thirdly, seriously sit down and reconsider the alter egos within. It's time to break down all these existing denotations (i.e. gender and characterizations) and focus on the deeper connotations within. Initial experiments have led to the creation of an extremely versatile, yet unstable personality of 68% compability on the MBTI scale (so much for the spirit being willing and the flesh being weak). Till the time both sides become congruent, I guess I'll have to live with this intermediate no-man's land for now.

Of course, I'll have fun along the way. These three months feel exactly like the period of time last year after I ORDed. Hopefully they will be equally productive, fruitful and meaningful- and of course, deranged.
