Character construction- Kimmie's World

Yes, it may seem as if I am taking too much time on her alone, and some may even suspect me for showing favouritism for her over the other characters. But I must stress again that the limits of a character in this story is boundless, and hence I cannot say enough of a single character. I have to thank certain people for helping me define the other characters (esp. for Ian and Elle) while I concentrate on Kim for the time being, even though they are not obliged to join me in partnership for this story.

And today I am glad to say that this perervered effort has led to bear much fruit.

In PWNMV2.0 (and v1.0) the first planned character construction of Kim is thought to be:

Picture Time !

The last week was kinda free due to the great 21km run on Sunday, as a result we found ourselves with a generous amount of time left to ourselves. Moreover my mind was still greatly EMP-ed by the 3 Kimmie Stories I had written on the previous week and as a result I couldn't write logically the whole time. So we got more to the drawing parts and tried sketching out possible scenerios that could have happened to the characters- Some were true to the story, some were random speculations, but all of them had been meticulously thought out in terms of characterization before they made it unto the paper. The captions on those pictures should roughly tell you the agenda of those pictures. Anyway do enjoy.

The 3 way relationship

Currently, all drafts, drawings, and entries on project W itself are capped at at a level of development of approximately 3.14. This is because I do not want the my characters to change in their personalities or characteristics even while I am writing the story. Doing so would result in an inconsistency in narration and even irrelevance to the story, and I do not want to re-write it for the fourth time anymore, therefore we are now more or less stuck with these characters for the time being.

I like these current characters right now. Kim, Ian, and Elle; three people with radically different character traits from each other, each very individual in their own respect, and yet all of them paradoxically incomplete on their own unless they actually be together and compliment each other...

This is what I mean:

Kim- Matured in mind, very practical, but easily deluded by emotional insecurity and scars.

Ian- Naive, refers to past experiences, influenced easily, yet determined when mind is set.

Elle- Thinks only how to suit the situation to her personal agenda. Always covers her mistakes.

Integrating Kim and Ian would actually normalize out the innate insecurity of Kim with the innate determination of Ian. Moreover Ian's easily influenced personality and Naive-ness would be countered with the maturity and practicality of Kim. In this way Kim and Ian actually compliments each other in both an internal and external sort of way when put together

Integrating Kim and Elle would on the other hand blend in an essence of mental creativity of Elle via her personal agendas with the practicality of Kim. Kim's fatal mistakes of being easily deluded by emotional security would too be protected and covered with Elle's innate ability to cover her mistakes.

Integrating Ian and Elle too would actually normalize Ian's Innocent and naive outlook with Elle's complex, scheming personality. In this case, it seems as if the integration of Ian and Elle would arise a case where the character of Elle 'eats' Ian up; paradoxically, Elle's ability to think very complexly without action is actually complimented with Ian's determination when his mind is set.

And thus it makes sense why these three people are bonded together in such a sort of way. In the story, Elle is supposed to be dominating Ian until Ian meets Kim, whom had always looked up on Elle as a bigger sister (for protection and inspiration). Then Kim and Ian get together and they clique well together without actually knowing why. Their relationships forged are not one of coincidence, but actually due to the complimenting of characters and identity. This would thus give this story an edge of practicality and make it real, unlike the case of a typical drama serial where people meet purely out of coincidence with little meaning behind

anyway, attached is a conceptual picture of the three of them together, each portraying their own characters. Note the contrast in these characters as they stand side by side, and yet do note that somehow it seems as if this picture is balanced out itself already in its own respect. This is actually because of the background fact of the complimenting of the characters. Perhaps you may feel it, perhaps you may not, anyway do enjoy.

Kim, a walkthrough

Yes, The above four pictures concisely summarizes the Visual-Character-Analysis for Kim. These pictures present her in 4 different ages- namely: 7, 15, 16, and 29 years. They were not drawn by me, but actually from one of my platoon mates whom is in collaboration to this project. Every of those pictures has a certain rationale that is intimately linked to the story itself- These I will consider each in turn.

In PWNMV2.0 ( 2004 ) the Kim envisioned within was actually a much more outgoing, matured, loveless, ah-lian girl of 16 with a stunning body and drop dead gorgeous face. It was simple- make her hate her parents, make her ringleader of her clique of girlfriends, and throw in a string of vulgarities for added effect. This was because Nine Months was supposed to be a vulgar, romance-less, and bitter story that focuses on the brutality of life against a girl plagued with the fact that she is a teenager and pregnant. She was supposed to be drop dead beautiful for the sake of being beautiful- she was supposed to be half a delinquent.

But today, although I still did not want this story to be a romance rah rah drama serial, I personally did not want to write a pornographic-loveless book with the maturity of a 16 year old. Moreover, who cares of a delinquent? Thus after much consideration, and help from my platoon mates, finally a new character was formed- one with a more innocent tamed outlook, and with more insights and love to life. On the other hand I still do wish to preserve the original essence of Nine Months, and after much tweaking and debate with my illustrator, the more-or-less finalized product is as shown:

From the character analysis, we can see that Kim is an emotionally insecure person whom cannot hate people. Thus it would be most appropriate that as a child, she would have a soft-toy to act as a companion and rest haven that she will bring around if she feels alone of scared. She would call it Teddy because of the simple fact that it rhymes with Daddy. She lost her dad when she was 7, Teddy was conceived to be her surrogate 'father' when she is actually playing daddy with.

elements from version 2 of the story are still retained, including the fact that she is beautiful. However now with a new set of character traits, she had moved away from a 'sexy' outlook to a generally more 'cute' outlook. Hence we have normalized her hairstyle back from a re bonded stylish mane to a natural shoulder-length hairstyle. Still, we have retained other traits such as an ample bosom and wide hips that led down to slender long legs. We have decided to give her a little more flesh- we didn't want her to end up anorexic... after all, Elle was supposed to be the anorexic one.

We did not change the outlook of her when she was pregnant. She was still supposed to 'be wearing loose fitting shirts to break the shape of a bulging tummy.' and we still generally kept original to her depressed state, although we have changed the reasons from 'I do not look beautiful anymore' to ' I lost my family', after all, she was supposed to be a selfless person in v3, and much more thoughtful now.

the fourth picture would be one of much interest, because in v3 the story would not end like how it previously ended in v2 when Kim is 29 and Mel ( her daughter ) is 14. Instead, her story will end on the age of 19 when Mel is only 3. This picture is actually a future picture of her when she finally becomes that doctor she always aspires to be, and how she would probably turn out like then.

These pictures themselves are not final, because the complexity of her character is still not fully rendered out even up to this very day. Every day, new character traits are being formed, on her agenda, intentions, thoughts, and desires. We are still stuck in v3.14 now, but as much as there is, I believe that we are in for a good start.

PW2NMV3.0 Characters (KIM)

In essence, Kim is supposed to be the main character of this project. ( call her heroine, Hong Gan bitch, whatever ). The following excerpt is a little character analysis of her, and perhaps a little of her background childhood. She is supposedly seventeen today, and Nine Months is actually a story on her when she was fifteen, seen through a series of journal entries and personal memories.

Character Analysis (Level 1)

It is the complexity of the real human character that will actually intrigue one to feel for and love...

KIM (a.k.a. Kimberly Ng; NgHXKi )
- Formerly known as Kim (V1.0), then Kimberly Ong (V2.0)
- Name is actually an acronym for all the main characters involved within this story (Kim, Ian, Mel)

General Comments:
-She seeks the best way out of everything for everybody, practical, but is easily deluded by emotional security and scars.
-She believes in the complete reunion of her family one day.

Background:
-She was once loved by her parents. She was once happy. Today her outlook is now remnant recollections of the past full life she had once lived. (Hello, yay, smiley’s)
-Psychologically functional family causes her to resolve never to make her parents mistakes. Therefore her actions tend to focus more on the loving and emotional side. (Contrasting to Elle, she cannot hate.)
-She had always had a special relationship with dad. Today, most of her habits and preferences are based on the things they once did together. (Sandcastles, teddy, stairs, Ian)
-Due to the liability of her family through her childhood, she does not have the opportunity to boast of any asset (toys, clothes, accessories, places she went) she possesses. Instead she always looks up upon others (Elle) as role models.
-Ian is the first person she is leading on. (He resembles her father, and hence that close relationship)
-Deprivation has forced her to learn the value of cherishment. Little things (stairs, teddy, tissue etc) may mean a lot to her.
-She believes that the only way out is by education. She’s diligent in her studies and is poised to excel in the upcoming O level examinations.
-However, past childhood insecurities will affect her decisions especially when the situation is nostalgic (The original Sin). Her fanaticism for the complete reunion of her family and fear of loss will lead her to make radical decisions if necessary.

Timeline:

6 years old- cracks start forming in her life
7 years old- Dad leaves the house, she meets Elle in primary school
13 years old- Elle has a new boyfriend (Ian)
15 years old- she meets Ian

alright alright, I haven't updated for a very long time already. Lol...

Technical terms 1st ( plz dun mind this part )

The passing of Threshold Chasm 1205 on the 19th May 2008 has led to the conclusion of project C2, bringing an end to Thoughts Of A Deranged Mind. This is because the purpose of T.D.M has been fulfilled fully with the crossing of Threshold Chasm 1205...

Hence in other words, there are no more self-reminiscent reflections anymore. Yay?

What am I doing today? Preparing for the 'A' levels of these 2 years, the evaluation examination thingy... waiting in bunk for things to happen day after day, hoping nobody will come and kill us because we are all sleeping on the bed at 10am in the morning. Dreading going out and sitting at the field and doing more routine stuff, running 15 km (average) every other day, and anticipating the 14th March 2009.

Oh yeah, and one more thing. Engaged in PW2NMV3.0. Okay, okay, here are the details of the... thingy. I dunno whether it will be intriguing to others, but I sincerely hope that the end product will not disappoint.




PW2NMV3.0

Those above words is basically an acronym for: Project W2 Nine Months Version 3.0.
Project W is essentially a fictional world made to accommodate a story known otherwise as Nine Months. Project W2 means that I am revisiting this project for the 2nd time

Nine Months is a story that has grew up with me since the age of 15. I have originally wanted to write this story in secondary three (v1.0), but due to the lack of maturity then, it has to be put on hold. It was re-visited again in 2004 (June) with the partnership of a fellow literature student, and 52 pages of manuscript have been produced then. However today they are all lost in transition. Looking back, they too looked immature and superficial.
So today, 5 years after, I am engaged in NMV3.0

Many people back in secondary school can still remember there three characters:
Kim,
Ian
Elle
And those in JC can remember those 6 infamous pages of pornography written.
Those are actually excerpts of Nine Months itself, or what today I have called collectively as Project W1 (then).

Nine Months v3.0 would not be a stupid children's story. And neither would it have the drama and hype like it had been written in v2.0. This is owing to the paradoxical fact that a dramatically great story need not be dramatic in the 1st place, and that a dramatic story need not be a dramatically great story…( the drama paradox )

Instead, it will focus on three major areas of study
-characterization
-realism
-inference.
For it is the complexity of the real human character that will actually intrigue one to feel for and love...

Basically, this book would be written in 3 parts separately
-The book of history (background, prehistory narration etc)
-The book of narration (narration proper)
-The book of the characters (thoughts, 1st person introspective) ,
and one can only understand the full story if they combine all three books together.

Today, PW2NMV3.0 has already a flagship chapter to denote the tonality of the book ( the original Sin, rewritten). It is still in the early stages of development (v3.14 in comparison to the projected completed v3.99). It is expected to be complete by 14th March 2009.
